1. What is Kantha?
Kantha is a traditional form of hand-stitched embroidery from India and Bangladesh, and more so the Bengal region. typically made using old cotton fabrics (saris, lungis), layered and stitched together to create beautiful, colorful patterns. Each Kantha piece tells a unique story through its intricate designs, and wear and tear. The embroidery is done traditionally by women and also skilled artesans, making each item one-of-a-kind.
2. Are your Kantha products handmade?
Yes! All our Kantha products are handmade. The intricate hand-stitching is done with great attention to detail, those traditional techniques are passed down through generations to create the vibrant patterns that define Kantha embroidery.
3. How do you pick your Kanthas items?
All the items (wether a jacket, or a cushion cover) start as a kantha quilt. There are many types of kantha quilts. I tend to select items depending on the purpose: for jackets and robes I select quilts that have minimal wear and tear and less patches. I believe the most intricate and patched quilts should be kept as they are, like an artwork. I will select more patched items for cushions only if I see that some part of the quilt are beyond repair. Some quilts are over-dyed and over-printed (indigo, block-print) which is another layer of reuse that I find beautiful.
4. How should I care for my Kantha items?
To keep your Kantha items looking beautiful, we recommend gentle care: Hand wash or machine wash cold on with mild detergent. Line dry or tumble dry on low heat.
